As I become more involved in using functional nutritional therapy in my practice, I realized that many people are still confused about the safety and efficacy of various dietary supplements. Because these products are "natural", many think they are still safe to use. Although supplements and herbs can be safer than drugs, which can still function as drugs in the body and must be used with caution and respect.

It is estimated that over 80% of world population and 60 million Americans use some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). However, although many believe CAM compliments traditional health care, most do not inform their doctors they take these products. And, many providers donÂ't ask or discuss CAM use with their patients, although a survey of 181 cardiologists found that half of them took antioxidant vitamins, themselves.

What many people donÂ't understand is that there is a regulatory agency responsible for the supplement industry. Products herbal are not tested for purity, effectiveness and safety as drugs. In 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) was enacted which requires the FDA to prove beyond doubt that a supplement is unsafe before removing from the market. Apart from regulating what can be included on label, they are unable to enforce any other regulation.

There is no incentive for companies to supplement conducting patent searches because the products they are unable Â'naturalÂ. Marketing herbs and other supplements save millions dollars not spent on research, or worse, however, conduct their own  "research" that often do not include rigorous controls. Although there are many manufacturers of supplements and excellent reputation in the market, the typical consumer is unlikely to know that we are credible. Many independent representatives only know what the company calls them, and be as aware as consumers.

Same if the supplements are pure and harmless in themselves, problems arise when combined with medication. * Phenytoin is a medicine used for attacks. Interactions herbal to be aware of include ginkgo biloba, white willow, lemon balm, cap, kava kava, and the root of Valerian, to name a few. Folic acid is also important to know that folic acid supplementation is necessary with Phenytoin, but excess can be harmful.

* ITA is important to take supplemental calcium and vitamin D two hours apart, taking phenytoin or digoxin, so as not to interfere with the effects of these druga's.

The greatest concern are interactions with the herb St. John, who was taken for 7.5 millions of Americans as a remedy for depression. This herb can cause serious consequences when are caught with drugs like Prozac, Zoloft or Paxil, as well as warfarin, cyclosporin and oral contraceptives. This herb may also interact with digoxin chemotherapy drugs and other drugs, causing treatment failure. Some of these interactions are serious enough that If St. John's wort was a drug the government to restrict marketing, make it a problem only on prescription, or require warnings on the label.

So what can you do?

Anyone taking a dietary supplement should first do your homework. Know exactly what the effects a special supplement and learn all known interactions. There are many excellent websites for information on the Internet. Good Rule of thumb is to find a site that offers products for sale!

ITA also important to tell your doctor what supplements you take, to avoid full potential drug interactions that could endanger health. Although many credible professionals sell products, there are many others who sell products, but that donÂ't really understand the physiology of the human body and just make money. If I had to take supplemental L-arginine as weightlifting, is it better to drive pre-or post?
